Riva del Garda – Trentino
About 4.30-5.30 h
The Contrabbandieri hiking trail will offer you a superb climbing experience and a marvelous view of Garda Lake. With its demanding exposed sections it retraces the ancient path that the salt and tobacco smugglers would walk.
Venturing up the vertical walls heading Garda Lake protected by your helmet and harness evokes the lives of those fearless men.
After an hour’s walk along the old Ponale road which has become a cycle path nowadays, you’ll go up a by-track and reach the vertical sections rising steeply from the lake.
You’ll go on through exposed ledges, a traverse on a climbing sling, a walk on a timeworn smuggler’s log and a ladder always secured by carabiners, wall hooks and ropes. Some more dizzying ledges and finally the last traverse on a 50-metre climbing sling again. Easy, eh?
I thought that the Smugglers’ path was easy, but the old chap Nazza has made me change my mind: now it has become medium-exposed. I’ve tried it again and again and he is actually right!!
But don’t worry because with your expert guide you’ll be able to overcome every step and have great fun too.
This is definitely a perfect blend of trekking, via ferrata and climbing and spectacular view and breathtaking experience is guaranteed!!
Medium ‘via ferrata’ with some demanding and tiring exposed sections
The cost includes the rental of all equipment: helmet, harness and a ‘ferrata’ set.
